Life is too short to live in an unhealthy way. Make the most of your life by becoming your best self. It could impact your family and the world. I would like to walk with you through this journey to wholeness and healing. Here are some of my areas of focus:
Family
I have been married 40-plus years to my husband, Tim. We have four terrific children, plus their loved spouses, and six wonderful grandchildren. We enjoy spending time together, walking our three dogs, riding our tandem, walking on the beach, music, studying, writing, and traveling. Our family is multi-cultural which has been a very rich experience and has helped me to understand the world differently.
Experience
For over 35 years, I was involved in Christian ministry and worked with children and adults before officially entering the Clinical and Christian Counseling field. Ten of these years, I served together with my husband in a collegiate setting, as a missionary to Guatemala, and in church ministry. Through this, I have come to believe that Jesus is our healer.
Since 2007, I have enjoyed sitting with people of any age (5 - 105) in private practice. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor with the State of Washington and an approved Supervisor for Licensing.
Prior to becoming the Gateway Counseling Director and Counseling Pastor, I worked as a Clinical Supervisor at Kitsap Mental Health Services (KMHS) in Bremerton for nearly seven years where I earned the recognition of Mental Health Professional. I helped to start and lead the first Thinking About Smoking Cessation group at KMHS.
Education
I earned my Masters in Counseling Psychology from Northwest University in Kirkland, WA; and I earned my B.A. from Michigan State University in Religious Studies, with minors in Theater, Non-Formal Education, and Spanish. I regularly attend trainings to keep up-to-date with the latest research for therapeutic interventions.
Fees
My current fees for services are $135 per session for individuals; and $145 per session for couples and families. I currently do not bill insurance companies but do work with several employee assistance programs. Most insurance companies reimburse my clients for my counseling services.
About Mario
Simply stated, I’m a guy who likes to provide professional therapeutic services with a personal touch. Here are some areas that I focus on:
Family
I grew up in a Navy family in the Kitsap area and have remained on the Peninsula for the past 30 years. My wife, Michelle, and I have been married for the past 15 years and we have two fun, energetic boys. If it is a sunny day, you’ll likely find us playing near some body of water.
Education
I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LH60656337) in the State of Washington. I received an M.A. in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. I have also double majored with a B.A. in Psychology and a B.A. in Biblical Studies from Northwest University.
Experience
My experiences have prepared me well to be both professional and personable. I have been counseling in various capacities for the past 18 years and it has been an honor to be a help to people along the way.
I also have a separate counseling office in Bremerton where I see clients on Monday evenings. If you are coming from the south and location is a concern, you may want to consider seeing me there at Fully Alive Therapy.
When not in counseling sessions, I am serving our church, Gateway Fellowship, as a staff teaching pastor. Prior to this role, I served as the student ministries pastor for eight years in which I had the opportunity to lead and counsel adolescents along with the parents of teens and pre-teens.
My pastoral roles have allowed me to see and experience different cultures such as India and Indonesia. In addition to these cultures, I’ve served in the inner cities of East Los Angeles. and Washington, D.C. These experiences have helped me to be more culturally-conscious as I enter into new relationships.
I completed an extensive internship with Catholic Community Services of Western Washington, which is located in Bremerton, Washington. I had the opportunity to work with a vast array of clients to prepare me for the diversity that Western Washington offers.

Areas of Focus
Experience and Education
Before entering into the field of counseling, I worked for Teen Challenge in both the U.S. and as a missionary-in-training in Russia. During this time, I worked with adolescent girls at New Lifehouse Teen Challenge in Disney, OK, and then with training and mentoring adult staff in Russia, based out of St. Petersburg. When in Russia, I also studied the Russian language through language school and then through personal tutors. Later, I resigned from missions work and married my husband, Daniel. We then both became associate pastors for my husband’s father’s church on the Navajo reservation on the Arizona/Utah border, where we had the pleasure to serve for six years. I also did substitute teaching in one of the local high schools on the reservation.
Toward the end of studying for my master’s degree in Professional Counseling, I did my internship with Behavioral Health Resources (BHR), where I interned in the Child and Family Services department in the Olympia and Shelton offices. After graduation, I became one of BHR’s Child and Family Therapists in the Shelton office, working both in the office and in schools, providing therapy with children and adolescents from age 3-19, and later, taking on adult clients due to increased need within the agency. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate with Washington State, and am close to finishing my 3,000 postgraduate hours required for full licensure.
Education
I earned my Master's degree in Professional Counseling from Grand Canyon University in 2019; and I earned my B.S. from Southwestern Assemblies of God University, with specializations in Cross-Cultural Missions Ministries and Counseling Psychology. I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT+), in addition to Trauma-Focus (CBT+). I also attend various trainings in order to study and keep up-to-date with other essential therapeutic interventions that could also assist my practice.
Family
I have been happily married for nine years. We have been blessed with our beautiful four-year-old daughter, who keeps us very busy! We enjoy family time together, doing hobbies such as bicycling, hiking, gardening, singing, camping, cooking/baking/grilling, fishing, taking family trips to Arizona and Oklahoma, participating in our home group, and drinking coffee. My husband is a proud member of the Navajo Nation. Studying about Navajo culture and family traditions have been important in enriching our family heritage.
Fees
My current fee for services is $130 per session (individual) or $140 per session (for two or more people). I currently do not bill insurance companies but do work with several employee assistance programs. Most insurance companies reimburse my clients for my counseling services.
We all experience hardships and circumstances out of our control from time to time. My desire is to help you empower yourself, regain control of your life, and change your mindset so that you can have the most contentment and joy possible. I hope to create a safe place for you to develop your strengths while equipping you for positive change as you navigate the challenges of life.
Areas of Focus
Education and Experience
I recently earned my Master's degree from Liberty University Online in the Licensed Mental Health Counseling program. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Religion and Christian Counseling from Liberty University. I have worked with children and adolescents in a variety of settings; from residential foster care focusing on behavior rehabilitation services at Pioneer Human Services, to ABA services with Maxim Healthcare, and spiritual guidance as a youth leader at Newlife Church. My education has included Spirituality, Crisis Counseling, Group Counseling, Multicultural Counseling, Family Studies, Career Development, Psychopathology, and more.
Philosophies and Techniques
My counseling methods are informed by evidence-based treatment strategies, specifically Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based (MCBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). These methods of counseling seek to treat negative thought patterns, renew one’s mind, and teach new strategies to help an individual cope with life’s challenges effectively.
My central belief behind all of these strategies is that the greatest path to healing is through finding one’s most authentic self with Christ at the center. I believe that each person is created uniquely in Christ and must be treated as an individual. I will seek to serve each person in the way that best fits them to create a path to holistic healing, growth, and peace. Seeking counseling requires a lot of courage and strength; your step in faith will be met with kindness, genuine care, and understanding.
Fees
My current fee for services is $130 per session (individual) or $140 per session (for two or more people).
Areas of Focus

I have augmented my counseling studies with additional coursework at Regent College, Vancouver, B.C. in Systematic Theology, New Testament Studies, Theology of Love and Longing, and Suffering in the Old Testament. I earned my Bachelor of Arts from Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL and an MBA from Seattle University.
Philosophy and Techniques
I am grounded in, and motivated by, my faith in Jesus Christ and my belief in His power to provide hope, healing, and restoration. Consequently, I am deeply interested in the integration of faith in the process of healing and growth, and gladly combine different aspects of theology and psychology in the therapy process when invited by you, the client, to do so. As we work together exploring the unique concerns and stressors that bring you to counseling, I draw from an integrated approach to therapy, often informed by evidence-based practices. I aim to foster a warm therapeutic environment and relationship where you will experience being seen, heard, and understood.

My therapeutic philosophy is centered on dedication to serving, educating, and empowering individuals to foster resilient connections with themselves, others, and spirituality. In therapy, the aim is to create a space to unfold complexities and cultivate hope, healing, and mental
well-being.
In my toolkit, you’ll find a collection of evidence-based therapeutic techniques carefully selected to meet the diverse needs of individuals, couples, and families. Together, we’ll explore the depths of the past when it’s beneficial, paving the way for a thoughtful journey toward growth.
Inspired by esteemed modalities such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy, the Gottman Method, Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Family Systems, and Intergenerational Therapy, I weave these approaches into our sessions. Formal Education
I earned my Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Liberty University. I also earned my Bachelor of Arts in Applied Music from Walla Walla University.
Philosophy and Techniques
I believe that mental health is equally important to our physical health and indeed one influences the other. My approach to therapy is holistic and tailored to the needs and strengths of the individual. I tend to lean towards cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and solution-focused therapy. My approach is generally eclectic, taking into consideration neurobiological implications. I am also comfortable investigating spiritual avenues of healing when desired and approved by the client.
I strongly believe that the therapeutic bond between therapist and client is essential to successful outcomes. My heart’s goal is that our sessions will be a place where you will feel safe, accepted, given grace, and understood. My desire is that I will be able to help facilitate my clients to a place where they will recognize and draw on their own skills, strengths, and abilities that will allow them to live more fully as God has intended for all of us.

Formal Education
I am completing my final year of a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental health Counseling with an emphasis in Childhood and Adolescent Disorders at Grand Canyon University. I also earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Behavioral Health Science degree at Grand Canyon University.
Philosophy and Techniques
We are intricately designed and deserve to experience life through the lens of dignity, value, and worth. Through counseling, we can identify areas of concern and work in a collaborative manner to set goals and learn skills to promote wellness and joy for the individual and their family. The early years of life are a dynamic time, with the influence of attachment styles, biology, parenting skills, and present capabilities forming variables that can be adjusted to create a foundation for healthy connection and address the impact that developmental trauma has on relationships and sense of self.
I have an eclectic approach, preferring to use the theory that best fits the client and their worldview with an emphasis on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Somatic Experiencing (SE) Therapy to promote a holistic understanding of the connection between the brain and body. Previously, I have trained in Trust-Based Relational Intervention as a caregiver and have experience working with children in the foster system as well as those with neurodivergence and developmental delays. My hope is to facilitate a place of safety and honesty for clients, meeting you where you are and supporting healing at your pace.
